Library

The role of the library in the International School of Lausanne is to underpin the educational philosophy by supporting and enriching the educational programme.

We become fully human through the acquisition of language.  Through language we are able to share in the experiences of mankind, past and present.  In our own culture, much of this sharing is done through the medium of print, whether in books, newspapers, magazines or on the computer screen.  An ability to read fluently, intelligently and with interest enables students to become fully participating members of the world community.

The library and the teacher/librarian support the educational programme by:

  • selecting and organising resources to support implementation of the school’s programme
  • ensuring that resources are selected with due regard to school needs and curriculum requirements
  • providing opportunities for students to develop and use skills in information literacy by use of current information access
  • providing experience to stimulate reading and develop in students a desire to read
  • extending the resources available to staff and students by cooperation with libraries, schools and other organisations in the wider community
  • participating in professional development courses and conferences and networking with other teacher/librarians to provide current and relevant support

We use a reader-centred definition of quality:

"The best book in the world is quite simply the one you like best; you can discover that for yourself, but we are here to help you find it"
