Swedish

Philosophy

Supplementary education in Swedish aims to strengthen the students’ understanding of their identity, preserve and further develop knowledge which will facilitate their return to Sweden. It is vital for children living in a multi-cultural environment to have a good understanding of their mother tongue. It is also a key to cultural heritage and literature. It is important to recognise that all of the individual students’ languages are important and interactive, with learning in one supporting the others.

Aims

The programme should:

  • develop the student’s ability to express themselves in speech and writing
  • development the student’s ability  to read and understand different types of texts
  • develop the student’s understanding by studying the structure of Swedish and comparing different languages
  • develop a profound knowledge of Swedish Literature and cultural heritage by reading books, learning poetry and songs, and by reading and re-enacting drama
  • encourage students to become responsive and enthusiastic readers
  • develop confidence in reading
  • encourage students to develop their own original styles in writing
  • develop an awareness of the importance of good handwriting, conventional spelling and punctuation
  • develop an understanding of the writing process
  • give knowledge of history, geography, traditions and society so as to strengthen cultural identity and self-esteem
  • develop an awareness of current affairs in Sweden.
 
Years 1 to 3
Years 4 to 6
Speaking and Listening
Students shoould:
  * give shorter and coherent oral accounts of personal experiences and events
* take part as speakers and listeners in small group discussions or activities
* listen to fairy tales and children’s literature and be able to show an understanding of the text.

* onfidently give different kinds of oral accounts in front of other students
* talk part as speakers and listeners in small and large group discussions, expressing a personal view.

     
Reading
Students should:
 

* start the reading procedure
* progressively read with coherence and comprehension.

* read silently and aloud with confidence
* show a reading comprehension  and be able to express it through talking and writing
* read at least two books of different authors and some newspaper articles

     

Writing

Students should:
 

* know the alphabet and be able to extract the vowels
* produce short pieces of writing and letters

* know the Swedish vowels
* differentiate between long and short vowels
* have knowledge of certain spelling rules
* have good handwriting
* produce pieces of writing and essays, showing knowledge of punctuation and spelling
* write relatively faultlessly

Students should also show some knowledge of Swedish geography, history, culture and tradition.
