IB Diploma Programme Results

Some Background

At the International School of Lausanne we are very proud of our students’ IB Diploma Programme results. The long term mean of approximately 34-35 points is healthy and compares very favourably with both the world mean, of approximately 29.5 points, and other international schools within Switzerland and globally. However, we also recognise that Diploma Programme points are simply one method of judging the ‘success’ of the Diploma Programme. There are undoubtedly specific things we could do to increase the overall Diploma Programme points score at our school. Such activities include placing students in language courses which are not appropriate for their level, encouraging students to take easier mathematics courses that do not stretch them, or only entering our most academically talented students for the full Diploma Programme. Nevertheless, the IB Diploma Programme is a demanding course of study, and several students each year choose to focus their efforts on achieving the ISL High School Diploma only, rather than both the ISL High School Diploma and the IB Diploma simultaneously. Achieving greater success with a reduced range of courses that meets the requirements of the ISL High School Diploma is the correct choice for a number of our students: more information can be found by clicking on the link for ‘The ISL High School Diploma’ to the left. Decisions with regards to appropriate course of study, subject groups and levels are made in order to provide students with the most challenging, intellectually stimulating, yet suitable combination of courses for each individual student.

We strongly believe that the success of the Diploma Programme at ISL should be judged on much more than the final Diploma Programme points scores, preferring to measure our success on some of the less tangible outcomes of the programme, such as those outlined by the IB’s Mission and strategy and the IB learner profile. Along with the number of Diploma Programme points, we consider part of our success to be that our graduates are life-long learners who are interculturally aware, seek to make a positive difference in the lives of others, and remain part of a learning community. We also believe that university destinations for ISL graduates reflect our focus on holistic education rather than the number of Diploma Programme points awarded at the end of two-year programme.

More information about Diploma Programme results and university destinations is available from the High School Profile.
