Students who are not enrolled in learning support (Academic Coaching) or the English as an Additional Language (EAL) course start a two-year compulsory German or Spanish Language Acquisition course for Year 8 and 9. These are foreign language courses which teach students to understand and speak in everyday situations. Furthermore, they offer an insight into the culture of the countries in which the language is spoken. Students also gain a sound basis in the skills, language and attitudes required for further study. Students begin phase 1 in Year 8 and progress through one phase per year level. In Years 10 and 11, students may continue to take Spanish or German as an option but not at beginner level.
