ISL has officially launched the first phase of its dual language programme with the introduction of two dual language classes, one in Year 4 and one in Year 5. The Year 4 and Year 5 dual language classes will follow our existing PYP programme in both French and English. The classes will be taught by Andrew Dailly in Year 4 and Lisa Marlow in Year 5. Benjamin Cornet will act as the francophone homeroom teacher, dedicating 50% of his time to each class.

Why did you decide to teach in the Dual Language Programme this year?

Having grown up in a bilingual environment, I have always been comfortable with the French and English languages. My university studies focused on language acquisition, and while teaching abroad I learned Japanese and Spanish as well. Speaking more than one language has given me so many opportunities in life – being part of this team was simply an opportunity not to be missed! I am excited to offer our students the opportunity to develop their language skills.

What are you passionate about?

Language learning and music have always been great passions of mine and there are limitless connections between the two:  both are rhythmic, melodic, emotional, expressive…Music in fact enabled me to learn Japanese for instance.  I would make up chants to help myself remember specific phrases/words.

In terms of teaching, literacy is my absolute favourite subject to teach.  There is nothing more rewarding than being involved in developing children’s ability to read and write.  Those who know me will know that I am a bit of a word nerd as well…word inquiry is a creative and scientific approach to learning spelling that I have embraced fully as I have seen the benefits of the approach in all kinds of learners.  And it’s great fun as well.

What do you foresee as the major challenges for this programme?

I think the biggest challenge in implementing any change is making sure you have a strong, cohesive team in place. I am fortunate to work with such caring, talented and experienced colleagues. Although we are all very different, we value collaboration and strive to provide the best for our students. I love working with this team and know that we can overcome any challenges that come our way.
