Chickenpox in the Primary School

09 Oct 2025 ISL Weekly Newsletter

There are several children in the Primary School with chickenpox.

Chickenpox is a normally mild and common childhood illness caused by a virus. It causes a rash of red, itchy spots that turn into fluid filled blisters after about a day. Other possible symptoms are fever, loss of appetite, headache, tiredness and a general feeling of being unwell.

The incubation period is approximately 21 days and the person is contagious from 1 to 2 days before the spots appear until the spots have crusted over (usually 5-6 days after the spots appear).

Groups of people that are most at risk of serious consequences from chickenpox are new born babies, non-immune pregnant women and those with a weakened immune system. In any doubt, please contact your family doctor.

As a school, we follow the Canton de Vaud guidelines regarding school eviction for illnesses. Children with chickenpox are welcome to continue coming into school as long as they are feeling fine, exhibit the same energy levels as normally and have been fever free for at least 24 hours.

We appreciate your understanding and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in contact with us.
